The first series of UK TV talent show The X Factor was broadcast from 4 September to 11 December 2004. It was won by Steve Brookstein, who went on to have some chart success, with runners-up G4 achieving two platinum albums before splitting up in 2007. Simon Cowell was the winning mentor. Although Brookstein won the series, Cowell later admitted that G4 - mentored by Louis Walsh - were the real winners of the show.[1] Brookstein and Cowell reportedly fell out over Cowell's insistence that he record covers versions, rather than self-penned material, leading to him being dropped from Sony BMG, and his name being little-mentioned in subsequent series of the show.

After Petronella dissolved, Callaghan then formed Boom, later to be renamed DZ5. DZ5 auditioned for the first series of ITV talent show The X Factor, unaware that the new show's willingness to accept groups only applied to vocal groups. The panel of judges, Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Sharon Osbourne, advised Callaghan to re-audition as a solo singer in order to proceed in the competition. Callaghan was selected by Sharon Osbourne to be one of her acts at the live finals. He finished in third place overall.

On 26 February 2010, her debut single, titled "Beautiful Lies", was released in Ireland. On 4 March 2010, it debuted at number 23 in the Irish Singles Chart.

In early 2004, Brookstein auditioned for the first series of The X Factor, a new television talent show that aimed to discover a star recording artist in the UK (effectively replacing Pop Idol). His audition failed to impress two of the judges, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh, who thought he lacked the motivation and confidence to succeed but the third, Simon Cowell, thought he was "that good" that he asked Brookstein to return the following day and sing again. At the second audition, Brookstein managed to impress the other judges and was put through to the next stage of the competition. He went on to reach the live shows, where contestants are put to the public vote, as one of three contestants in the Over 25s category mentored by Cowell. He reached the grand final on 11 December 2004 alongside G4, and won despite a controversial outburst against him from Osbourne. However, according to Sharon Osbourne's subsequent autobiography, he had gained the most votes in every single one of the live shows. For five years, he held the record for the greatest number of votes ever received in the final - 6 million, but this is now held by series 6 winner Joe McElderry, who received over 6.1 million votes.

Rowetta re-entered the spotlight in 2004 when she auditioned for a place in the finals of The X Factor. After impressing the judges with her rendition of Lady Marmaladeshe was placed in the over-25 category, which was mentored by Simon Cowell, who described her as "Amazing but, barking bloody mad". Her soulful, powerful voice proved to be a hit with audiences, although she was criticised for competing as an established singer against amateurs. The producers defended her, stating that the show was open to anybody. Her performances on the show earned her rave reviews and she made the final 4 and was the last woman in the competition, never having to compete in a sing-off.
